A strange sort of friendship this one. Saw my friend Janus today and was a little bit stunned by how delighted I was to see him. I guess I missed him more than I realized over the holidays. I'm always hot and cold with him, loving his warmth, enthusiasm and obvious fondness for me, but dismayed by his poor physical condition and his goofiness. The jury's still out on what or will not happpen with this boy from Ivey. We went shopping at O'Connors and he bought $1,500 worth of clothes. Dontcha know I can't resist a man in a fine set of threads. If only he would groom himself like that more often.

A new year, a new set of resolutions. Here is my list of things guaranteed to produce (or your money back) a much improved, leaner and meaner version of yours truly. Henceforth, I shall be known only as Cherine the Uber-Being and will answer to no other moniker. Consider this the Uber-Being's 2003 Top 10 list. Drum roll please...

10. Forsake meat for the month of January. If I make it to the end without constant dreams of steak, burgers, and a tender lamb shank, repeat for as long as possible.

9. Expand cooking repertoire. My friend Aga once made a New Year's resolution that she would not make a single meal twice for the entire year. She served up 365 tantalizing and varied entrees to her overjoyed and grateful husband. Though I'm not quite as ambitious as Aga, I've realized there's just so many times you can make pasta with tomato sauce, lasagne and chicken stir fry before it's time to add a few more tools to the culinary toolbox.

8. Live within my means. Death to credit and frequent trips to Holt Renfrew. Time also to introduce the word "budget" into the 'ole lexicon.

7. Read 52 books - yup, that's one a week. That should be a good dint into my already mammoth collection of unread books collecting dust on my bookshelves. Book No. 1 is Eric McCormack's The Dutch Wife, courtesy of the lending library of Alex Rettie.

6. Learn to knit and make a few things. Kinda old maidish I know, but dammit I need a hobby and knitting might just be the very thing. Kinda zen and I can give all my friends scarves as birthday presents - whether they want one or not.

5. Do some freelance writing. I would like to have five articles published in various publications and I would like to write and publish one short story. That's a tall order and kinda scary, but the Uber-Being lives big.

4. This one's a perennial favourite on the Top Ten list: lose weight. Target weight is 125 lbs. Current weight: 140 lbs. Very doable.

3. Train for, enter and complete a triathelon. Doesn't matter which one and doesn't matter what my place is, just as long as I'm not last.

2. Get myself a good full-time permanent job that pays me a minimum $50,000/year. That would make Resolution #8 even more attainable.

1. Find myself a damn good man.

It's going to be one hell of a year boys and girls.
