Naps, glorious naps: Indulged myself with a long, luxurious one this afternoon - it felt absolutely sublime. I take a nap on average of about six times a year, and it's usually because I'm either a) wildly hungover; or b) wildly (more legitimately) ill. Today's nap came courtesy of the 'bronchial pneumonia' diagnosis my doctor slapped down on me this morning. At least five days rest he commanded me against my futile protestations that I really can't take that much time off work. I'm of the firm opinion that all doctors should trade in their white labcoats for black t-shirts with the words 'I'm sorry, you've mistaken me for someone who gives a shit' tatooed across them.

It's been 10 years and seven months since I last had pneumonia. It's not something you easily forget. Two nights ago though, in my fever-induced paranoia, I was convinced that I had meningitis and that this was THE END OF THE ROAD for me. So, relatively speaking, just plain 'ole familiar pneumonia comes as a bit of a relief.

Nothing like being sick though to remind you of how alone you really are. No one to make me a simmering pot of chicken noodle soup; no one to fetch me my beloved ginger ale; no one to give me a sweet Jesus bit of company as the hours move like glaciers in my little germ-laden condo. And my wonderful parents, who can always be counted to lovingly take on the role of soothing caregivers when I am ill, are, as we speak, driving into Las Vegas to catch Celine Dion at the MGM. Hmmph!

For the next five days, if anyone's looking for me, you can find me in my tattered old bathrobe watching every single game on Hockey Night in Canada, and in between periods I'll be reading I Don't Know How She Does It by Allison Pearson, a book I've been trying to pick up for a while but ironically haven't found the time. My guess at the ending is that she doesn't do it, she just pretends to herself and everyone else that she is until she gets bronchial pneumonia and the farce that is her life comes crashing down around her.
